How we Started

JET21racing has acquired the TriPoint built World Challenge Touring Car (WCTC) from Elder/Brenner Racing back in 2005. When it last campaigned in WCTC the car wore #21 and we had a MIG21 for sale (see: jet4sale.com) hence we are JET21racing. Our motto “little budget big fun” comes directly from the fact that thus far the budget has been additional monies earned by me during deployments & TDYs. It’s not a lot and as result we’ve been pretty low on client list of our mechanic. 2007 was supposed to be my year off from the Global War on Terror and my year of racing; it was not to be. Another pilot resigned and I was given 10 days notice to deploy, the car was still not running.

The Protege Saga

A year vanished as my engine installer (Jei at BlackTrax) kept shifting the motor install right. April turned in June which became July or August and now is November. He worked on pet projects like his GF's WXR STi and the cars of friends. After putting me off for almost a year Jei quoted me $1200-2000 for the install. Based on his reputation (sportscar magazines, etc) I thought it was a good idea to wait. Once completed he charged me over $4000 for installing my motor which he could not get to run because the MOTEC was too complex. He had what I thought was a good theory about the injectors being too large; with a mechanics lean I had no choice but to pay. So I collected my NON-running car and set about to fix what he said was wrong. Injectors, I ordered several types and always had the same results ("flooded car that would not idle"). Then I set about to find the proper length axle after Jei stated that my axle was too short. I went to a MAZDA only mechanic in San Jose and learned that the axle was indeed the proper one. Turns out Jei's people forgot to install the retaining clip so it would pull out of the tranny which did not get a mount (I supplied new AWR mounts). So basically at this point I feel pretty well ripped off by BlackTrax but it gets even worse. I finally decided to take the car back to TriPoint (the orginal constructors who raced it for years) in Conoga Park. Now I'm informed that many parts were not properly installed besides the tranny and axle. He did not properly install things like the power steering pump and coolant overflow jugs. Front suspension was laughable and on and on. TriPoint was not in the least impressed by Jei's work. Don't believe the hype in the tuner magazines. All that self promotion does not hide the fact that this guy is a pure amateur mechanic. Once all was said and done it cost an additional $3500 for TriPoint to un-do the mess BlackTrax created and tune the car on a Dyno. Never mind the fact the cost of transporting the car and the two years I lost in the process. I put my trust and faith into Blacktrax, paid $4000+ to have a supplied running engine installed into a race chassis with MOTEC and was robbed by an incompetent mechanic who charged for his time although he had zero results.

TriPoint fixes BlackTrax mistakes After a year of frustration chasing after Jei's bogus recommendations I finally take the car to a mazda expert. What I discover is gross incompetence so I arrange to take the car to the original owner and builder during the off season. Although pricey, Craig and his guys know their stuff. The go over the car and fix the dangerous Blacktrax mistakes and get the car ready for the dyno-run. Turns out it was a failed coil pack and not the MOTEC or injectors causing the problems. Thanks Craig & Tripoint

Jet21 get's Doug Chandlers old transporter With my long time friend and supporter (thanks Bubbsy) retiring from combat rescue I lost my transport to the track. It was time to get our own and Garin at Champion was our savior. We made a deal and he delivered; Quite literally. Garin (not a trucker but a business owner) drove the big freightliner through a Washington & Oregon blizzard to get me this very cool rig. Then he helped me load the Protege and drove with me to Conoga Park to teach me the truck and provide some very nice conversation. Champion is great.

The MIG21 is Broken into .. much damage. The Mig21 600UM had been stored in a fairly secret location (on a former DDR base inside an additional fenced area inside a locked warehouse. Some one who knew it was there and with knowledge of an aircraft mechanic broke in. The canopies were broken to gain access. All instruments (they were 100% complete & perfect) stolen, ailerons stolen and more. Too bad this may be the end of that dream. I may cost too much now to make it fly.

Friends Jets are Flying A couple friends have their MIG21's flying and I also have a few friends with L39's. Without some partners I will never enter the jet club so most likely my MIG will now be parted out to keep my friends flying. Meanwhile it looks like a Baron will be a far better choice for me as the annual is underway. I do have a full set of Collins Pro Line available since my Baron was a IFR check plane for 727 crews. It's all very nice, 121 maintained and low hours. Call if you need ProLine stuff.

WCTC E36 4Door 2.5L Project While waiting on Blacktrax to do their thing I decided to build my own E36 from a donor WCTC car. With the cage and suspension in place it looked like a simple project but given my limited time it still has not been complete. The wiring inside was a mess and the surface rust a pain. I hope to either finish it or I'll make someone a sweet deal for the project. Buy it as is or with as many parts as you like. It's sweet.

Robby Gordon's 2000 Swift DB10 I concluded that front wheel drive is not my thing and have placed the Protege up for sale at http://www.race-cars.com/carsales/worldchallenge.htm to replace it I wanted something rear wheel drive that would fit inside my transporter along with my E36 (either my street or my race car). Then along came a chance to own a very nice SWIFT. I have an EFI dash and ECU so now just need a motor.
